Welcome to HEAD START, a workshop to guide you through the jungle of written and unwritten rules and regulations of Swedish higher education. It equips you with fundamental and easily accessible knowledge on planning and running courses, conducting examinations, key deadlines, legal frameworks and central actors in Swedish higher education.

This page provides you with more information on the workshop - one question at a time. Click on a question to see the answer.

  • This workshop is for all teachers at Swedish higher education institutions – irrespective of if you are teaching at a public university or university college or working for an independent education provider. It equips you with knowledge and tools to bravely master your first classes and courses, but also to further develop as a seasoned teacher as well as to exchange good practices and network with your teaching colleagues.

With that said, this workshop is extra interesting for you if you are an international staff member, as it provides you with fundamental knowledge on written and unwritten rules and regulations within the Swedish academic system.

  • By investing in this workshop or a series of workshops, you are investing in your current and future staff. Our mission is to support you in attracting global talent, keeping it and making it thrive. Our base workshop HEAD START as well as our in-depth workshop series add value to a working environment that provides room for exchange, development and inspiration.

Especially for international staff members, the Swedish academic system may seem like a jungle of written and unwritten rules and regulations. Fundamental and easily accessible knowledge on planning and running courses, conducting examinations, key deadlines, legal frameworks and central actors in Swedish higher education creates more time for your staff members to focus on what really matters: connecting with students, driving innovative and relevant research projects, working in a way that is sustainable for both body and mind.

Better equipped teachers also lessen the workload of your administrative staff. By that, academic and administrative staff get more resources to focus on working proactively and strategically.

  • You decide! Based on our availabilities, we will try our very best to find a workshop date that matches your preferences. Indicate your preferred dates in the booking request form.

  • We encourage in-person workshops, as they provide the best outlet for interacting and networking with fellow teaching colleagues. However, we do understand if you prefer to conduct the workshop digitally instead and will accommodate to your preferences.

  • Alice Srugies is instructing the workshop. She has more than ten years of experience working in higher education, teaching in diverse classrooms, developing and managing courses as well as study programs in Sweden and Germany. She has both conducted research on strategic communication and worked as a communication professional herself, with a particular focus on making complex topics easily accessible to different audiences. Learn more about her on the website www.alicesrugies.com.

  • Workshops are limited for up to 15 participants to allow for an interactive workshop setting in which we can discuss, answer your questions and adapt the workshop as best as possible to your institution. Workshops run with a minimum number of four participants.

While the idea is to hold workshops for staff members of one Department or Faculty at a time, it is possible to provide workshops for staff members of one higher education institution across Faculties. If you are interested in this, please let us know in the booking request form.

  • The workshop and the workshop materials are in English. However, we are happy to conduct the workshop in Swedish upon request.

  • The workshop is offered at an introduction price of 10.000 SEK (excluding VAT) until June 2022 to give you the opportunity to get to know us, how we work and what we can add to your institution. This price covers the fees for all workshop participants as well as workshop materials.

The workshop price does not include possible costs for renting a workshop room or travel costs that arise for the instructor when travelling to your premises to conduct the workshop.

  • Sometimes, the best questions pop up after a workshop. That is why you have the chance to digitally ask follow-up questions. We would also love to learn more about your teaching experiences after you have completed the workshop. How have the knowledge and the tools from the workshop helped you in your teaching? Which challenges have you come across? How have you tackled them? We are keen to hear your stories and your feedback.

Not ready to part ways yet? There is more in store!

A half-day workshop can of course only be a starting point or a stepping stone. HEAD START is our base workshop. If you enjoyed our workshop, value the knowledge, skills and tools you have picked up in this course or simply enjoyed the workshop as a forum for exchange, we offer a series of workshops that build on HEAD START and enable you to take the next step on your journey as a teacher in higher education or as a teaching team.

In addition to workshops, we offer consulting services to help you advance the programmes and courses you offer as well as to tackle the higher education challenges you face. Learn more here.
