ENGAGE:
Relationship building in diverse classrooms

This workshop starts with a simple premise: Communication has two layers - a content layer and a relationship layer. The concepts and research insights we want to get across and discuss form the basis of our teaching. But it is the relationship layer of communication that enables us to develop trust, support our students‘ development and produce great course results.

This page provides you with more information on the workshop - one question at a time. Click on a question to see the answer.

  • ENGAGE zooms in on the relationship layer of teaching and addresses learning in diverse classrooms from three different perspectives:

    • the teacher (How aware are we of our own communication? The things you say and not say – verbally and non-verbally?)

    • the students (How can we move pre-conceived notions to active listening?)

    • the social environment (How does the social environment influence our interactions with students?)

Classrooms bring together people from different academic and professional backgrounds with individual life histories. In this sense, every classroom is diverse.

However, teaching in international study programmes adds the role of language as another layer of complexity. In this workshop, we will zoom in on the specific challenges you experience in the classroom (in both Swedish and international programmes) and jointly identify ways of tackling them.

  • This workshop focuses on relationship building in the classroom encompassing all forms of group interaction from lectures to seminars and laboratory exercises. However, the workshop’s building blocks and take-aways can also be applied to one-to-one interactions with students, for example in thesis supervision.

  • By investing in this workshop or a series of workshops, you are investing in your current and future staff. Our mission is to support you in attracting global talent, keeping it and making it thrive.

To develop relationships and trust in the classroom, to listen actively, to show interest and recognition for students‘ ideas and positions is an important foundation for a student-centered approach to learning. ENGAGE supports your staff to further develop as teachers and to thrive in the classroom. Moreover, the workshop and its accompanying workbook contribute to a higher student satisfaction, retention and throughput.

  • You decide! Based on our availabilities, we will try our very best to find a workshop date that matches your preferences. Indicate your preferred dates in the booking request form.

  • We encourage in-person workshops, as they provide the best outlet for interacting and networking with fellow teaching colleagues. However, we do understand if you prefer to conduct the workshop digitally instead and will accommodate to your preferences.

  • Alice Srugies is instructing the workshop. She has more than ten years of experience working in higher education, teaching in diverse classrooms, developing and managing courses as well as study programs in Sweden and Germany. She has both conducted research on strategic communication and worked as a communication professional herself, with a particular focus on making complex topics easily accessible to different audiences. Learn more about her on the website www.alicesrugies.com.

  • Workshops are limited for up to 15 participants to allow for an interactive workshop setting in which we can discuss, answer your questions and adapt the workshop as best as possible to your institution. Workshops run with a minimum number of four participants.

While the idea is to hold workshops for staff members of one Department or Faculty at a time, it is possible to provide workshops for staff members of one higher education institution across Faculties. If you are interested in this, please let us know in the booking request form.

  • The workshop and the workshop materials are in English. However, we are happy to conduct the workshop in Swedish upon request.

  • The workshop costs 15.000 SEK (excluding VAT). This price covers the fees for all workshop participants as well as workshop materials.

The workshop price does not include possible costs for renting a workshop room or travel costs that arise for the instructor when travelling to your premises to conduct the workshop.

You can also book this workshop as part of a package and save on workshop costs:

  • Sometimes, the best questions pop up after a workshop. That is why you have the chance to digitally ask follow-up questions. We would also love to learn more about your teaching experiences after you have completed the workshop. How have the knowledge and the tools from the workshop helped you in your teaching? Which challenges have you come across? How have you tackled them? We are keen to hear your stories and your feedback.
