THRIVE I:

Set yourself up for thriving in the workplace

This workshop is a companion in the first months at your higher education institution. It tackles the practical tasks and challenges you face when starting a new job. What are

key documents that regulate your work? Who are the most important actors within and outside of your institution that help you thrive in the workplace? Learn more in a step-by-step guide that we tailor to your needs.

This page provides you with more information on the workshop - one question at a time. Click on a question to see the answer.

  • We offer a series of building blocks that we can combine on the basis of our participants‘ needs. You can choose among the following building blocks:

    • Almost getting started: Appeals (What are appeals? What employment decisions can I appeal? What do I do if someone appeals against the decision to hire me?)

Getting started: The first administrative steps when arriving in Sweden

    • Permanent or fixed-term: What types of work contracts exist? What implications do they have?

Set up for good health: Health insurance, occupational health as well as health and fitness benefits as part of your employment

    • Maintain good health: Planning and negotiating your work tasks, workload and overtime

Set up for financial safety: insurances, pensions, negotiating your pay

    • Language in the workplace: (How) is language use regulated at the workplace? What are preconditions for and barriers to creating a workplace in which both Swedish and international colleagues thrive?

While the building blocks in italics may be particularly interesting for international staff members moving to Sweden, the remaining building blocks are designed with a broader audience of all new staff members in mind. If you would like to cover and deepen all building blocks of THRIVE I, the workshop can be conducted in two half-day sessions.

  • This workshop addresses staff members who have recently started a position at a Swedish higher education institution. A number of building blocks (see question ‚How does THRIVE I work?‘ above) are particularly relevant for international staff members. The flexible design of THRIVE I allows us to assemble the buildings blocks that serve the interests and needs of our workshop participants best.

  • By investing in this workshop or a series of workshops, you are investing in your current and future staff. Our mission is to support you in attracting global talent, keeping it and making it thrive. This workshop and its accompanying workbook have a simple goal: Provide your staff with a companion to master the administrative and practical steps and challenges a new employee faces in the first months at your institution. THRIVE I serves thus as a compliment to your onboarding process and allows for deepening topics that may be difficult to accommodate for in the busy everyday work life. This allows your staff to focus on what really matters: connecting with students, driving innovative and relevant research projects, working in a way that is sustainable for both body and mind.

  • You decide! Based on our availabilities, we will try our very best to find a workshop date that matches your preferences. Indicate your preferred dates in the booking request form.

  • We encourage in-person workshops, as they provide the best outlet for interacting and networking with fellow teaching colleagues. However, we do understand if you prefer to conduct the workshop digitally instead and will accommodate to your preferences.

  • Alice Srugies is instructing the workshop. She has more than ten years of experience working in higher education, teaching in diverse classrooms, developing and managing courses as well as study programs in Sweden and Germany. She has both conducted research on strategic communication and worked as a communication professional herself, with a particular focus on making complex topics easily accessible to different audiences. Learn more about her on the website www.alicesrugies.com.

  • Workshops are limited for up to 15 participants to allow for an interactive workshop setting in which we can discuss, answer your questions and adapt the workshop as best as possible to your institution. Workshops run with a minimum number of four participants.

While the idea is to hold workshops for staff members of one Department or Faculty at a time, it is possible to provide workshops for staff members of one higher education institution across Faculties. If you are interested in this, please let us know in the booking request form.

  • The workshop and the workshop materials are in English. However, we are happy to conduct the workshop in Swedish upon request.

  • The workshop costs 15.000 SEK (excluding VAT). This price covers the fees for all workshop participants as well as workshop materials.

The workshop price does not include possible costs for renting a workshop room or travel costs that arise for the instructor when travelling to your premises to conduct the workshop.

You can also book this workshop as part of a package and save on workshop costs:

    • 3 Workshops for 30.000 SEK (excluding VAT) – HEAD START + two other work shops (instead of 40.000 SEK, excluding VAT)

    • 4 Workshops for 40.000 SEK (excluding VAT) - HEAD START + three other work shops (instead of 55.000 SEK, excluding VAT)

  • Sometimes, the best questions pop up after a workshop. That is why you have the chance to digitally ask follow-up questions. We would also love to learn more about your teaching experiences after you have completed the workshop. How have the knowledge and the tools from the workshop helped you in your teaching? Which challenges have you come across? How have you tackled them? We are keen to hear your stories and your feedback.

Not ready to part ways yet? There is more in store!

A half-day workshop can of course only be a starting point or a stepping stone. If you enjoyed our workshop, value the knowledge, skills and tools you have picked up in this course or simply enjoyed the workshop as a forum for exchange, we offer a whole series of workshops. Explore our portfolio – you can book one workshop at a time or benefit from our workshop packages.

In addition to workshops, we offer consulting services to help you advance the programmes and courses you offer as well as to tackle the higher education challenges you face. Learn more here.
